The Scrabo Sluggers hit the road to Hydebank Park to begin their season against the Belfast Angels, and while the result did not go their way, there was still plenty for the team to be proud of.

The Sluggers lined up a player short with nine, but with rookies Kim and Chrissy making their debuts, and Sara stepping up for her league debut as pitcher, the team showed brilliant spirit from the very first inning.

Sara may have been making her debut on the mound, but she pitched with the confidence and composure of a seasoned pro, giving the Sluggers a strong platform in a challenging opening fixture.

Being a player short meant the outfield had a huge job to do, and although the scoreline does not fully reflect it, the hard work of Zara, Adam and debutant Chrissy deserves a big shoutout. All three worked hard throughout the game to help stop runners from advancing bases.

The infield battled hard too, with James and Pete combining well to stop runners at second, Dawn showing absolutely no rust after last season, and debutant Kim putting in a fantastic shift.

Male MVP was awarded to Alan, while Female MVP honours went to Sarah and Kim after their standout performances.

After the game, Captain Pete Maxwell was full of praise for his squad:

“The guys knew they had their work cut out today and not once did they bow to the pressure. With such a strong performance, I can’t wait to see how we fare when at full strength. As always I want to thank the Angels for their kindness and I look forward to seeing them again. And as always, a great performance from the umpires, and we wish everyone all the best for the season ahead.”

Final score: Belfast Angels 35–9 Scrabo Sluggers.

It was not the result the Sluggers wanted, but it was a gutsy and positive start to the season, with debuts, big performances and plenty to build on ahead of their next game against the Lisburn Hawks.

Come on the Sluggers!
